The rigours of time have resulted in the surface becoming so dark that the scenery is almost a mere silhouette. A clean would reveal its true identity but isnt it so much better like this? Its intriguing to find a canvas thats been left untouched for 250 years as usually oil paintings of this age have been cleaned at least once or twice. If this was an 18th century

This masterful depiction captures the sitter character with a controlled yet expressive touch

Funke was primarily known as a court painter and two of his works are held at the Bremen Museum

During this period he produced many interior scenes and his works gained popularity following museum exhibitions

with palette in hand

We’ve been unable to locate it but hopefully it’s still standing in a village somewhere
